The Bicycle Wheel & Tire, A New Way of Thinking.
Goodyear x Zipp.

Modern road cycling is constantly evolving in the quest for raw speed. In an unprecedented move within the road cycling wheel and tire market, Goodyear Bicycle Tires and ZIPP are collaborating to make you faster. The Goodyear Vector R Z30 NSW, Z30 and Z35 SW, part of the Goodyear Fitment Series range, are a result of 2 market leaders in their field working in parallel to gather knowledge, share research and test data, ultimately producing a faster system.

What Is Goodyear Fitment Series

Inspired by OE tire equipment in the automotive world, Goodyear Fitment Series tires bring a new way of thinking to the cycling world, by viewing the wheel and tire as a system to unlock new levels of performance.

What are OE Tires in the Automotive world?  OE stands for ‘Original Equipment’, OE tires are developed by tire manufacturers in conjunction with the vehicle manufacturer. Goodyear is one of the leading brands in OE with over 600 approvals from more than 30 vehicle manufacturers. The development of OE equipment takes place during the early stages of the vehicle design and development cycle. As part of this process, the tire manufacturer will focus on various performance aspects of the system as a whole, such as dry and wet handing, braking, and efficiency.

Why Fitment Series

Goodyear Bicycle Tires Fitment Series tires are the result of a collaborative approach to redefine performance and safety at the highest level. But why is Goodyear Fitment Series needed?

ISO rim with 28mm tire

Historically, bikes and their components follow a close, but not always synchronised line of evolution, with one part of the system often out of sync with the other along their evolutionary journey. For example, the standard 28mm road tire is designed for rims with an internal width of 19mm. This produces a mounted tire with characteristics and properties it was originally designed for; a correct profile, size, and optimally placed tread cap with construction optimized to support the load appropriately. Often this results in sub-optimal aerodynamic properties.

– Standard 28mm tires are designed for rims with internal width of 19mm rims.

– Actual tire size is 28mm.

– Tire profile is optimal.

– Tread cap located appropriately for cornering and protection.

– Construction is optimized to support load appropriately.

– Aero properties are sub-optimal.

Wider rim with 28mm tire

As market demands have moved on while standards have lagged, demand for wider rims have increased creating an opportunity for a new approach in tire design.
When a standard 28mm tire is mounted on a rim with a 25mm internal width, it becomes distorted beyond its original intension. The actual measured size increases beyond 30mm. The tread cap becomes flat and too narrow to span the cornering edge of the tire exposing the sidewall to the riding surface. this results in a tire to surface contact patch lower than intended by the manufacturer. The geometry and casing construction of the tire becomes inappropriate under usage load. In this usage case however, aero properties are improved in comparison to a 19mm rim.
– Mounted on a wider rim the size and shape of a standard 28mm tire becomes distorted.

– Actual size increases beyond 30 mm.

– Tire profile distorts, reducing performance.

– Tread cap is more flat, and too narrow to span to the cornering edge.

– Geometry of the casing construction is inappropriate.

– Aero properties are improved.

Vector R Z30 NSW on Zipp 303 rim

Shortfalls of these legacy systems have presented a clear requirement opportunity for a true system-based approach and new development process. When developed together to integrate as a system an optimized tire and rim system can push performance beyond the standard.

As an example, the actual size of the Vector R Z30 NSW tire remains 30mm when mounted on a Zipp 25-622 TSS rim. Optimal tire shape and profile are achieved, resulting in a 1:1 ratio with the rim for maximum aerodynamic performance. Tread cap coverage is designed in such a way as to ensure optimal and increased contact patch with the road surface. The tread cap extends across the entire contact zone, while casing and construction are designed to hug the contours of the road surface.

– When developed together to integrate as a system, an optimized tire and rim system can reach maximum performance potential.

– Actual size 30mm, 1:1 ratio with rim for aero performance.

– Optimal tire shape / profile.

– Tread cap coverage optimal for cornering performance.

– Geometry of the tire designed for adequate support on wide rims.

– Aero properties optimal.

“The Goodyear Vector Z30 NSW is the most efficient tire Zipp has tested in more than 20 years of wind tunnel testing.”
